December 4, 2017 Mighty Crew

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.
-Oscar Wilde
Dear Friends,
The newsletter is a little late this morning as I indulged upon waking, to a few more moments of languishing in awe of the moonlight flooding the bedroom and the sweet and haunting interchanges of our resident pair of owls still filling the airways with their songs. After starting a fire in the fireplace and pouring a cup of coffee, I went outside (where I live most of the time) and watched the moon and the clouds slowing change over Torrey Pines park to the new day. How blessed we are to live here.
What a grand Saturday morning we had here when a small but sturdy troop of us women, shareholders and friends, tackled digging up and transplanting Easter lilies and clumps of clivia to be transplanted to the trenches dug by our new helper, Avery, the nephew of one of our long supporting CSA members.  We dug, bent, lugged, tugged, pulled and successfully wrested twisted and stubborn roots from the ground hopefully to be happy in their new location to be enjoyed this coming spring by you in our flower bouquets.  We all enjoyed a Seabreeze lunch of one of my potages and yummy sandwiches polished out with succulent and precious cherimoyas from our tree.  We’re mostly in our 6’s and 7’s, if you know what I mean, and probably most of us headed our own directions afterwards for some Advil and a nap!  Good going girls and precious companionship.
And then, if that wasn’t gift enough, Sunday, Judy and her husband Steve (again shareholders), came in the afternoon and trimmed the blackberry bushes that barely survived the lack of water during the last few years of severe cutbacks.  Thank you thank you to all and it reaffirms why we fight so hard to hold on to this little scrap of land that gives so much back to us all.
Ever had red pears in a salad?  I like slicing them, squeezing lemon juice over while preparing the other ingredients and then mixing with Seabreeze salad, shredded carrots, blue cheese crumbles, chopped hazelnuts or pecans and a light dressing.  Yum.
It’s still dark so I’m back outside to listen to the simple symphony of the owls and bathe in the moonlight.  It’s going to be a great work day!

May our food this week nourish, comfort and sustain you.
