February 8th, 2016 Earth Estrous – Eggs!
I have said that there was great pleasure in watching the ways in which different plants come through the ground, and February and March are the months in which that can best be seen.

Dear Friends,
Oh where to start? The weather in our first couple of months of this new year has kicked off so many changes on the farm. We’re on triple time keeping up. Our sweet older hens are giving a few eggs, the first of the blueberries are coming in, lots of good tomatoes, lovely fresh greens of all varieties and of course the determined weeds. I swear it’s a battlefield beating them back. There’s no greater robber of moisture and nutrients like an uninvited invasive plant.
I can’t imagine a spring meal without mizuna. It’s the bunch of greens with serrated edges. We’ve grown it for almost 28 years and still don’t tire. It’s known as being from Japan and they are called ‘water greens’. Use in salads, on sandwiches, stir fried, in soups, stews, with potatoes, pasta, risotto and grain dishes. Or just fresh with olive oil, lemon or wine vinegar and seasoning? Delicious.
The baby cilantro is so good. Perhaps a dish with your tomatoes?
Call or email me if you need cooking tips. Happy to oblige.
