Dear Friends,
What a great class of ‘middle’ students from Earl Warren we had recently. They were bright, polite, energetic and so excited to pull their very first carrots from the ground, wash and bite in! I first did an exercise with them to write down on a card what they had had to eat or drink since the evening before, then to exchange the card with another student and read outloud. As I expected, there were peals of laughter as donuts, sodas, ‘to go food’, pizza, cookies, chips, tacos and such were read off. The word ‘organic’ wasn’t mentioned once. Of course there were a few fruits and juice but the point is, I didn’t have to lecture on nutrition. They knew. The challenge is to motivate for decisions on what to eat to be made by values, not convenience. It’s a lesson for us all.
Seems the black-eyed peas were such a hit, we’ll continue to occasionally send along to you dried peas or beans that are so easy to make into a dish along with your yummy and delicious vegetables. This week it’s classic split peas. If you haven’t (or ever) recently prepared, they’re fast, easy, delicious and oh so nutritious. Here are some classic methods, with or without ‘meat’..Enjoy
