January 30, 2017 Blessings and Opportunities

Wabi-sabi nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.”

Dear Friends,
We’ve all had that moment(s) in time when with the blink of an eye, life changes.  Last Friday the 20th, about 1:45pm, Kendall and I were discussing the potential gravity of two more impending rain storms to San Diego that we feared would make harvesting impossible and grappling with the hard decision to cancel all deliveries for the next week.  Only had to do that one other time when fires were raging around us and we had to evacuate. Just about then, tremendous wrenching and crashing sounds jolted the house. Rushing to the window, we saw instantly the damage – the downed live electric wires, the uprooted tree (100 ft tall?) and the tilted power pole.
The fire department arrived in about 10 minutes followed by police representatives and then AT&T analysis representatives. What remarkable, trained, polite and hard working men have been here all week. My gratitude and respect will always be there for them and too for you, our shareholders that understood we would be a day behind in deliveries and many of you didn’t receive flowers.  My sincere thank you to Donna for all of her work keeping us going while we were without phones, water, electricity or internet.  And to Andres and Raul who harvested in the cold rain and our drivers Jim and Doug that pulled out Thursday morning not knowing how severe the storm would be that day.  Thank you to all of you.
Well, our field of alstroemerias (Peruvian lilies) was pretty much destroyed.  The majority of the tree is still in the field.  We’re waiting for a tree service to have an opening for continuing to cut and then there will be the big clean-up.  Hopefully their perennial roots will survive and replacement growth will occur.  Our farm insurance policy doesn’t cover the damage so we’ll have to figure something else out.
All in all, change happens and challenges bring opportunities.
We’ll be back to our regular schedule this week, fitting in debris removal and fighting back the aggressive weeds from the rains.  I never want to hear the word ‘drought’ again!
     In appreciation,
     Stephenie
