“A farm includes the passion of the farmer’s heart, the interest of the farm’s customers, the biological activity in the soil, the pleasantness of the air about the farm — it’s everything touching, emanating from, and supplying that piece of landscape. A farm is virtually a living organism. The tragedy of our time is that cultural philosophies and market realities are squeezing life’s vitality out of most farms. And that is why the average farmer is now 60 years old. Serfdom just doesn’t attract the best and brightest.”

Dear Friends,
It was with great sadness we read about the closing of Suzie’s Farm this last week. Their last public farm visit was yesterday.   I know first hand of the demands, the joys and the sorrow of running a family farm. Every time a farm closes in San Diego, it is a loss that cannot be reclaimed.  The escalating expenses, the physical work, public expectations and the never ending chores and repairs somehow are off-set by the satisfaction of knowing we’re providing not only good product, nature habitat and animal husbandry but providing a psychological boost to people thinking there are still real farms and people not giving in to our present day food systems.  We at Seabreeze are no different than the remaining family farms in San Diego county.  We all share the same challenges that can only be met with the support of our community and that translates into customers.  To our existing loyal CSA shareholders, we thank you.  To those that know of us, let me reach out to you and although cooking and eating at home may not be within the ability of your life style, there are ways you can help.  Number one is to purchase a share that we then give to our local military families in need.  It’s not a huge expense to some and to the recipients, it’s priceless.  We currently have under 10 people donating to this cause and the need is great.  Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions about this service or if you’re able to participate.  Let’s all step up to keeping our farms and appreciation of our service people, especially with tomorrow being the 4th of July.  Let’s celebrate together knowing we have strong protective military forces and hopefully thriving and productive farms for our community.
  Most humbly,
Stephenie
