June 26, 2017 Military Families and Fourth of July

As we celebrate our nation’s freedom, we honor the courageous men and women dedicated to preserving it.

Dear Friends,
We here in San Diego are fortunate with our place on this planet and for the men and women in uniform that serve and live here.  Their families are included in their service and duties.  Several years ago it came to our attention that especially the young families could use ingredients and instruction for keeping them well fed with fresh and nutritious foods and sometimes the expense left them without good choices.  That’s when we asked that if you could, when on vacation, to donate your CSA share to them.  Many of you have been quite generous, and several have on-going donations.  We all thank you.  And, the need is still here. I received these two emails just last week and am asking those of you that can, to pickup a share or two of produce for them that will be most appreciated.  Angel is the young military wife and mother of two that is distributing to families that can use it. Here are their notes:
‘Angel B. recently told me about your hungry heroes program. As a military wife who works full time so we can afford to eat healthier, it would be such an amazing blessing to be considered for becoming a member of this program. We live up in San Onofre housing (near San Clemente) and currently around half of my income goes to feeding our household. I would be willing to help with delivering produce if it is on a weekend, as I work weekdays and it’s quite a trek down to your farm from our house.
I can’t tell you how wonderful this program idea is. I don’t attend many of the food giveaways because most of the food donated is processed, and/or expired, and most of the giveaways are at set times on weekday mornings. You are doing a truly wonderful thing.
Many Thanks,
E. B.’
And,:

‘My name is Kinsey and I was given your email from Angel. I have reserved a donation bag for next week and hopefully would love to become a part of your program in the future! I’ve seen the beautiful produce that Angel has taken pictures of and my family and I would be extremely grateful! Thank you for what you are doing for the Military, it is a extremely kind! ‘
Last week we had 7 donations.  Let’s make it 20 real soon and more from there!  Military Family Donation
We all have felt bad if we aren’t able to use all our veggies in the frig and here’s somewhat of a ‘catch-all’ recipe I find useful for busy days.  All of these ingredients can be substituted by items you have on hand:
Mustard Butter Pasta with Broccoli
    from The Tassajara Recipe Book
“This has become our standard summertime pasta, with a flavor as bright as the colors.  The pasta and vegetables cook together before being tossed in the mustard butter.  The recipe is adaptable to a wide range of vegetables:
A little edited:
1/2 c butter or ghee (may be part olive oil)
2-4 T Dijon mustard or your favorite
2 cloves garlic
2 T parsley, well minced
2 T chives, finely sliced, or green onion, sliced and minced
salt and pepper
1 T oil
2 Cups broccoli, cut into small flowerets (see below for variations)
3/4 lb pasta, fettucine or linguine
Set out the butter early to soften up.  When it’s soft, blend in the mustard. Add the parsley, chives, a little ground pepper and continue mixing for a short while to release their flavors.
Use a large pot to boil a generous amount of water with a teaspoon of salt.
Fan the pasta into the boiling water.  If you are using fresh pasta, add the broccoli at the same time.  When using dried pasta, add the broccoli (and/or alternatives) the last few of minutes cooking.
As soon as they are done, scoop out the pasta and the vegetable with an oval strainer.  Put the pasta and broccoli in skillet, allowing a little water to dribble in.
Add the prepared butter, and over moderate heat, toss the pasta with tongs until is evenly coated.  Keep the heat low enough that the butter does not bubble or fry- that will change the flavor.
Check the seasoning and add salt and pepper if necessary. ‘
Substitutes or additions may be cauliflower, carrots, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, or peas to name a few.
I’m sure some of you have heard of making cosmetics and soaps from goat’s milk.  If some of you want to try your hand at it (easy), I’ll discount larger amounts for you.  Still sweet and delicious as ‘Pet Food’.

Elsa’s milk, is available with your delivery through the Green Store.
We still have wonderful honey available too:

I’m so grateful to the volunteers we worked shoulder to shoulder with this last week.  It makes a huge difference!  Thank you.
    Happy cooking to all.
