October 31, 2016 What a Difference an Egg Makes!

I think one of the terrible things today is that people have this deathly fear of food: fear of eggs, say, or fear of butter. Most doctors feel that you can have a little bit of everything.

Dear Friends,
I usually know within a short period if there has been a new release of a book or a documentary of frightening food production or the mistreatment of factory farmed animals as the number of calls or emails increase demanding to know how we raise or crops and care for our chickens and animals.  I take the time, listen, agree it’s all awful and of course, offer to them to join as a shareholder.    On the one hand, it’s a good thing that people even care but what’s curious is that I can hear/feel when they become less combative upon hearing about our methods and animal care and then their objective is get off the call assured that there are still ‘good’ farmers out there.  One such call came in yesterday, a fellow resident of Carmel Valley.  When I politely asked why they didn’t want to become a member, she pointedly stated ‘you farmers get too much money from the government’ and promptly hung up!
There was no time to explain that we certainly did not, our sole source of income was from the farm and Seabreeze faces all the challenges of any small business in California these days and then some.  Oh well, perhaps she’ll think about it.  I left the office and feed the goats some blackberries.  It helped.
Another incident Saturday in sharing a few words with one of our lovely volunteers was her description of a conversation with a friend of hers, telling her she helped out on the farm.  Her friend commented something along the lines of ‘cool’ or ‘awesome’ and asked what she did there.  “Well, I help pull weeds”.  The reply was “why don’t you just use weed killer?”!  It’s a long, steep uphill journey my friends.
We still have a few jars of our delicious, good for you, local honey available.  Makes for a great inexpensive gift for someone:
