April 30, 2018 We’ve Lost One More

If you want to gather honey, don’t kick over the beehive.
– Dale Carnegie
Dear Friends,
It saddens me to tell you the wonderful couple that kept bees and provided to us their marvelous local honey have sold their property and their era of honey production is over.  Except for our ‘greens’ of course, honey is one of nature’s most valuable food sources for a variety of reasons.  Everyone knows that ‘farming’ isn’t easy and generally speaking, I hear in discussions, ‘oh, someone else will do it’ but that’s just not true.  Young people haven’t the land or skills to take up food production, although goodness knows there’s lots of them that would like to from the calls and emails I receive, but that’s just not realistic considering the odds and investment.  They have the passion and the energy but not the resources.  I don’t know, I just  believe so fervently that local production of food is so important for so many reasons.  Think I’ll go work off my frustration by digging a ditch or something this morning!
Ok, for you that might be overwhelmed by the bunches of ‘green things’ this week, heads up because one in particular might be strange to you.  It’s the purple/green one with large leaves.  If we were grazing and nibbling through the gardens, I’d break off a piece and have you try.  Raw, it has multiple layers of taste, from slightly horseradish-like to more subtle undertones.  Best cooking methods for a wonderful cooked ‘green’ (we love ours served over mashed potatoes) are simple:  Here’s one I like:
                                                     Simply Cooked Mustard Greens
Your other greens are arugula, always delicious in salads or sandwiches and a bunch of cilantro.  Yum.  GO GREEN!
Saturday, from 9:30 to 11:30 we had a terrific group of volunteers helping to harvest flowers.  It was a lovely day and we got lots done!  Thank you one and all.
Here’s to good food, friends, families and helping others.
Call or email me if you have questions or need cooking tips.
May our food this week nourish, comfort and sustain you.
