August 13, 2018 We Can Do This!

There is nothing I like better at the end of a hot summer’s day than taking a short walk around the garden. You can smell the heat coming up from the earth to meet the cooler night air.
– Peter Mayle
Dear Friends,
Congratulations fellow San Diegans!  We’ve made it through another long week of this hellish heat.  I know for many, your homes, car and work place have air conditioning or you’re on vacation and perhaps seeking relief at the beach. And that’s nice.  But for us, we had no choice.. Now, I’m fully aware things could be worse.  We dodged the wild fires that are too terrible to talk about that our northern neighbors suffered. Never the less, it was a rough week.  When we seeded the squashes, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes and the other summer crops, it was with visions of refreshing salads, favorite and new recipes to try and of course, the joy of plucking beans and cucumbers right off the vines and enjoying on the spot.  But after just 2 hours of picking cucumbers in the blazing sun, I can assure you, the thoughts weren’t very pleasant..  and then an on-shore breeze would waft through the gardens,  a hummingbird would flutter near by for a drink from the dripping sprinkler or a pair of monarch butterflies would cavort near by.  It’s all on what you focus on!
One of my favorite ‘go-to’ summer sliced cucumber recipes is  so easy and a ‘must try’.  1/4 c rice vinegar, splash or two of soy sauce, a little chopped ginger if you have it (not necessary), a little honey or sugar, a tsp of sesame oil and presto, a refreshing dressing. Pour over sliced cucumbers, chill and enjoy.  We like to sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on top.
And more good news.  Have re-ordered sone of my absolutely favorite items from ‘The Naked Bee’, a U.S. company with fabulous products and ingredients  The hand soap is indispensable in my kitchen, and the hand/body lotion is so cooling and soothing.  They’ve combined wonderful natural scents that are just a pleasure.  I especially like the little candle to light in the bathroom in the evening and take a quick  cooling shower.  They’re available on the GREEN STORE under Personal Care at a very reasonable price.
Vacation time is here for many and our military families are always grateful to receive your share.  Just drop us a note when you’ll be gone and we’ll see it’s given for good use.
Here’s to good food, friends, families and helping others.
Call or email me if you have questions or need cooking tips.
May our food this week nourish, comfort and sustain you.
