August 6, 2018 Farm News – The more things change…
So if a college education is indispensable, the challenge as I see it is how to make it more accessible. – Gordon Gee |

Dear Friends,
Admittedly I don’t leave the farm very often. Mostly only by necessity. Things change here daily. Some subtle, some dramatic. I don’t find it dull or limiting, rather mesmerizing and fulfilling. When there are thousands of life forms dependent on human care to become food for people or animals, there’s no missing a step. But the other day, we had to go south from Carmel Valley on the freeway and I was stunned by the construction and change by the university and the medical center. It’s a new world.
Good foundations for a well spent life however, don’t change that much. A cornerstone, like integrity. is a good education.. Having taught for many years at Lincoln and San Diego High Schools, I was always pleased to see qualified and motivated students go on to higher education. What has changed is the staggering cost of ‘advanced’ schooling.
Jonathan (pictured), is the son of Andres Ramirez, our one full-time employee that has loyally and steadfastly worked the land, providing the crops for over 20 years, to our farm supporters. He is an exemplary young man. He is dedicated to his studies, articulate, intelligent and with good promise to contribute to the next generation. He has availed himself of financial assistance through scholarships and the family is contributing all that they possibly can. Here is Jonathan’s letter:
To Whom It May Concern,
I am Jonathan Ramirez, son of Andres Ramirez, a long time worker on
Seabreeze Organic Farm for nearly two decades. I am a third-year
undergrad student at California State University, Fullerton, studying to get
into the university’s teacher credential program. I assist my father with farm
work at Seabreeze between semesters.
I am asking for financial assistance to assist with my expenses in college.
This can vary from a simple one time donation to a donation per semester
until I earn my degree. All donations can be set at the amount you wish.
I graduated from Vista High School as an International Baccalaureate
scholar in the top 1% of my graduating class. I am currently in the top 7.5%
of the junior class in college as indicated by an invitation into the Phi Kappa
Phi honor society. I have been on the dean’s list for the past four
consecutive semesters.
Thank you for your time.
Jonathan

Thank you for the notes and comments on the collards last week. One was pretty funny describing trying to figure out what in the world they were supposed to do with ‘dinosaur’ food. Use a leaf as a fan against the heat? I look forward to hearing what you think about the kohlrabi for this week. We love it fresh like an apple.
Vacation time is here for many and our military families are always grateful to receive your share. Just drop us a note when you’ll be gone and we’ll see it’s given for good use.
Here’s to good food, friends, families and helping others.
Call or email me if you have questions or need cooking tips.
May our food this week nourish, comfort and sustain you.
