June 15th Farm News – Berries from Heaven

I love berries. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, black berries, anything with an ‘errie’ in it! ~ Jordin Sparks
Dear Friends,
What’s the saying?  When it rains it pours?  Berry season was a little late this year but coming on now in force.  We’re sending blackberries, strawberries and blueberries this week and remember, they freeze well for later use if you’re not consuming them all.
One of our favorite easy and nutritious summer dinners is a simple Chicken and Strawberry Salad.
For the dressing: mix 1 t sugar, 2 T red wine vinegar, 1 T water, a little salt and pepper in a bowl and then whisk in 2 T of good olive oil for the dressing.
Place your Seabreeze salad, sliced Visalia onion to taste, some nuts (cashews, sunflower seeds, whatever you have on hand) and sliced strawberries into a bowl and lightly toss.  Add cooked chicken or marinated tofu cubes, dressing and toss.

Serve on plates with sprouts arranged along the side and sprinkle crumbled blue cheese for a topping.  Yum.

Last week we covered saving cooking water and using one gallon for 4 dishes.  Our patio plants are in good shape as we place pots needing water on a slated picnic table, pour our grey water with a little fish fertilizer in them and catch the water to be used again in buckets underneath.  The water in the buckets will then be used again for the next set of plants needing water.  Easy, convenient and satisfying!
“Choose Your Own” members..order by this evening and we’ll send you a basket of one of our berries in addition to your order.

May you enjoy and utilize all your items for this week.  If you need suggestions for use or recipes on any of your items, feel free to email me and I’ll help.

June, 8th Farm News – The 1 Gallon Water Challenge

No water, no life. No blue, no green.
~ Sylvia Earle

Dear Friends,

Have you any idea how many gallons of water it takes to produce the plate of food above?  Truthfully, I don’t know either.  I do remember in college reading a letter from an early California settler woman to her mother, on how precious water was on the frontier and how many times she would use a gallon of the liquid gold. She’d use  it for washing clothes, dishes, the kids, the floor and still kept her roses alive!  It was amazing to see how innovative she was.

So I challenged myself to see how many times I could use just 1 gallon of our precious liquid life.  We love home made egg noodles (thank you chickens and Elsa the goat) so made the dough (Grandma’s Egg Noodles) and cooked.  Scooped out the noodles, put the hot water back on the burner (saving electricity) and simmered Yukon potatoes until they were done.  Scooped them out again to cool and use for potato salad and cream of potato soup for later.  Then into the hot water went saved vegetable scraps and I mean scraps:  carrot bottoms and tips, celery, bell peppers, zucchini, onion, garlic, bay leaf, thyme…things most people put into the disposer.  Simmered this for about 15 minutes until aromatic.  Removed the scraps, saving them for the chickens and the earthworm bins.  Next, while water was still hot, added 3 cups of  pinto beans that had soaked overnight and simmered these until tender, about 2 hours, adding fresh garlic and a little salt, pepper and cumin for seasoning the last 10 minutes or so. Half went into the frig for chili or re-fried beans later in the week and the other half froze for those emergency times of ‘what to have for dinner’).  I felt pretty good about how to use my gallon of water!

Next week, I’ll share how I keep my patio roses and ornamental plants alive and thriving with used water.  Send me your tips and will share those too.  Speaking of sharing, we appreciate referrals and of course social media exposure, of which I’m being dragged screaming and lamenting into but let’s face it, it’s a whole new world out there.  And this smart phone thing I now have..makes me feel dumb.   I think I’ll go back to  harvesting now for your goodies for this week and listen to the bees hum and watch the Monarch’s dance through the milkweed.

May you enjoy and utilize all your items for this week.  If you need suggestions for use or recipes on any of your items, feel free to email me and I’ll help.

May 25, 2015 Farm News

Dear Friends,
This drizzly Monday Memorial day as we’re harvesting for this weeks deliveries, my family remembers my father, Daniel, and his two brothers.  All 3 were aviators in WWII and all came home to the country they loved.
  Remember those who served before.
Remember those who are no more.
Remember those who serve today.
Remember them as we eat and play.
Remember our protectors-
who are not home today.
Remember them all on Memorial Day.
-Emily Toma
In talking with a new shareholder, she shared with me that kale wasn’t one of her favorite greens and this week is the last cutting of the new kale/brussel sprout greens.  Although Red Russian kale is our favorite, we did enjoy growing and trying a new one.
If you like your kale in salads, here’s an easy recipe:
Raw Kale Salad (Massaged)
1 bunch kale, stems removed and chopped small
1/4 red onion or 1 shallot, chopped
Good olive oil
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Grated Insalata ricotta, 1/2 c
Salt and pepper
Sprinkle some salt and 2-3 T of oil over the kale.  Plunge your hands in and massage for a couple of minutes until tender.  Add ‘onion’, lemon juice, cheese and salt and pepper as you like. Fast, easy and tasty.
I’d say a day like today is a good candidate for a chili stew!  We like to add chopped kale for the last few minutes of cooking for a tasty and nutritional boost.

For our Choose Your Own members, please remember to place your orders for a delivery this week by this evening.
May you enjoy and utilize all your items for this week.  If you need suggestions for use or recipes on any of your items, feel free to email me and I’ll help.
