December 12, 2016 Crazy About Seeds

Love in each season as it passes;
breathe the air, drink the drink,
taste the fruit, and resign
yourself to influences of each.
-Henry David Thoreau
Dear Friends,
     As the days swirl past, we all feel the extra pressure of shortened daylight and still so many things to do.  Anything we can do in the kitchen to speed things up and still provide fresh good food can be a challenge.  I suggest the weekly habit of putting on a pot of water and simmer your scraps of veggies…onion, scallions, garlic, broccoli stems (or chard, spinach, celery, potato)  ..whatever.  This broth can be the base for many a hearty pot of beans, lentils or just plain good sipping.
      We love ‘seeds’ in our kitchen..mustard, caraway, sunflower, pine nuts, walnuts, pecans you name it.  But among the favorites are sesame seeds.  So good roasted or made into tahini.  Sprinkle on all kinds of things for taste and crunch. Tahini (like peanut butter only made with sesame seeds is easy to make), makes the delicious base as a sauce for cauliflower and broccoli..winter Queens.  Roast or steam your vegetables and whip up this easy sauce:
                                   Tahini sauce
     2 T tahini, well mixed
     1 T lemon juice
     1 T water (to think the sauce if needed)
     1 garlic love, minced
     1/4 salt and ground black pepper
      1/4 c minced parsley, baby celery, or Salad burnett
     In bowl, whisk together the ingredients.  Add to cooked cauliflower or broccoli and toss.  Serve while warm.
Our eggs are easy to order from the Green Store.
     We’re renewed in our commitment to provide more good food products to our local military families that reach out to us.  You can help by either buying an amount per month of your choice to be given to a family and/or share the information through the web’s social channels.  It all helps the momentum.  Together we can make a difference..
    Call or email me if you need cooking tips.  Happy to oblige.
