February 15, 2016 So You’ll Know

“A determined Yankee book drummer once told a Southerner that ‘a set of books on scientific agriculture’ would teach him to ‘farm twice as good as you do.’ To which the Southerner replied: ‘Hell, son, I don’t farm half as good as I know how now.”
Grady McWiney
Dear Friends,
Seems like every other day the ‘media’ spotlights another miracle food for us.  And that’s fine.  The more varied our diets, the better. I’m not sure what our school districts teach their students about nutrition anymore (it’s been a long time since I taught for SD Unified Schools)  but surely, everyone knows the importance of good ole basic Vitamin C (Benefits of Vitamin C) and in looking over the diversity of your CSA ingredients the last few weeks, thought you’d be interested in their nutrient value just from this one vitamin.  Here are a few of our recent items (and this weeks)  and the amount they contain by percentage:
     Bell peppers (1 c red or yellow) – 157%
     Broccoli (1 c)                              – 135%
     Cauliflower (1 c)                         – 73%
     Kale (1c)                                     -71%
     Cabbage (1c)                              -69%
     Bok Choy (1c)                             -59%
     Turnip greens (1c)                       -53%
     Yams (1c)                                    -52%
And that’s  not even counting the fruits (citrus especially).
So hope you’re enjoying and benefiting from your deliveries.  A lot of old fashioned hard work and planning makes it possible.  And grown with love and care..of course.
Call or email me if you need cooking tips.  Happy to oblige.
