January 12, 2015 Note from a Member of Seabreeze

Dear Friends,
Here’s a note from one of our members about her delivery.
Dear Seabreeze,
I became a member a few months ago by the encouragement of a friend that has been a fan of the farm for years.  I was reluctant at first because I liked going to the farmer’s market and choosing my own ingredients.  What I wasn’t admitting to myself, was that I only occasionally went to the markets (too busy) and really wasn’t cooking for my family as much as I wanted to.  So I joined.
Your deliveries have made a huge difference.  It’s challenged me to cook more (I love cooking) and having the seasonal fruits and vegetables on hand has made it a joy.  But you stumped me a couple of weeks ago with the blackeyed peas for New Years.  I’ve never had them before and sat them aside.  Well, last week made them with your leeks, vegetable broth, a couple of slices of turkey bacon, carrots, kale and a little baby fennel and celery  They cooked in an hour, during which I made corn bread and what a hit with the family.  Everyone loved it and I say keep the dried beans coming!”
This week we’re sending another ‘something’ a little different:  either our home grown poppy seeds or dried tomatoes.  They’re both quite versatile
Dried tomatoes are wonderful to have on hand.  Good in soups, stews, eggs, casseroles, you name it.  I like to soak them in good olive oil and toss with cooked pasta, fennel (roasted, pan fried or raw chopped small), any other veggies still on hand and feta cheese.  Kendall loves it.
Next week am going to send you all quail eggs!  A nice young man, Zach, has entered into the world of local foods and is raising duck and quail for their eggs.  Both kinds are very good for you (and delicious) and let’s support another brave soul trying to make a living from a small plot of land.  We have to keep this local food production supported.
We are in the process of creating a new website that will make it easier for us to have control over it and make changes and additions quickly. Any suggestions from you will be greatly welcomed.  We’re still in the process.
We now have a ‘tab’ on www.seabreezeorganicfarm.org to purchase a share that goes directly for local military families.  Those of you that can, we sincerely encourage you to do so, helping to give them nutritional food and stability for the farm.  Letting your friends and associates know of this program will be appreciated as well.

May you enjoy and utilize all your items for this week.  If you need suggestions for use or recipes on any of your items, feel free to email me and I’ll help.  It’s a wonderful time of the year for cooking (and it warms the kitchen!).

Happy New Year, peace and well-being to you all.

Please note that some substitutions may apply from time to time.
