June 12, 2017 June Joy not Gloom

Urban conservationists may feel entitled to be unconcerned about food production because they are not farmers.  But they can’t be let off so easily, for they are all farming by proxy.
-Wendall Berry
Dear Friends,
I hear the grumbling from people about the cloud cover and lack of sunlight but for us, it’s marvelous weather to work in.  Hot sun is not our friend when working.  One of the things I’ve been tackling, is dividing perennials (and doing search and destroy onlecherous noxious weeds) and among them are my purple bearded iris.  If anyone would like some, call or email me and I’ll put some into a separate paper bag to go along with your delivery.  If it doesn’t make it this week, it’ll be the week after.
I’m sorry to say the one of my favorite growers and providers, has called it quits after 33 years and is selling his farm in central California where he grows garlic.  I bought an extra case of his incredible dried garlic that is indispensable in the kitchen.  It’s not cheap, we pay $12.50 per packet, but it’s so worth it in flavor and convenience and goes such a long way.  And no clingy damp garlic shells!
A big thank you to everyone for not complaining about the summer squash every week coming your way.  I know it’s a challenge but the dang bragada bug cuts down on so many things we used to be able to grow this time of year.
We’ll be happy to see the fall season and cooler temperatures.
    Happy cooking to all.
