June 19, 2017 What’s goat’s milk got to do with Summer Solstice?

If goats had a word for delicious, it would have two meanings. The first would be: I like this. The second would be: This is what my body needs. For goats, they are the same thing.”
Dear Friends,
Yes, I know.  These are not goats.  But they are our baby turkeys from a few years ago and it’s a cute photo.
Thank you for the notes and comments this past week on the Elsa (goat) milk you bought from us for your pets.  Yes, it is sweet and delicious and we have more in the freezers.  One reason suggested is that there isn’t, nor has been, a male (stinky) goat ever here.   She is half Nubian and half Alpine, both heavy producers, but it was a huge surprise to us when she started producing small amounts a few years ago.    We even called the vet to come  check her out at first and he thought it was an infection.  But it turns out, that as female goats mature, so do their hormones, and hers kicked in to do what her genes said to do – produce milk!
But this year!  Those pesky hormones kicked into high gear and poor Kendall, my husband, who takes care of them, is sometimes having to milk her twice a day.  Like he doesn’t have better things to do.  We’ve been advised to cut back her grains (higher in protein then alfalfa) to lessen the production but I’m betting on the turn of the season this week (Summer Solstice) and shorter days to turn the spigots down.
I’m sure some of you have heard of making cosmetics and soaps from goat’s milk.  If some of you want to try your hand at it (easy), I’ll discount larger amounts for you.

Elsa’s milk, is available with your delivery through the Green Store.
One of your ingredients this week might be the young fennel.
This is a good one:      Yummy Fennel
We still have wonderful honey available too:

And much appreciation to the people that volunteer especially when they say it was their enrichment.  How nice.  Thank you.
    Happy cooking to all.
