March 9, 2015 Spring

The first day of spring was once the time for taking the young virgins into the fields, there in dalliance to set an example in fertility for Nature to follow.  Now we just set the clock an hour ahead and change the oil in the crankcase.

Dear Friends,
You may have been reading that the Monarch butterfly might go onto the endangered species list (Monarch’s) and that’s not good news.  However, this is one of many reasons that diverse farms like Seabreeze are so important.  We planted  milkweed plants many years ago, the main source of food for them, and we let them re-seed throughout the gardens.  I’m happy to report that we have a good amount of butterflies again this year merrily flitting around the grounds and devouring the milkweed plants.  If any of you would like some seed for your yards, send me an email and we’ll get them to you.  The plants are pretty hardy and have an attractive orange flower to them.
The first of the season strawberries and blackberries are starting to mature.  Strawberries become sweeter as the days warm up but are still awfully good and welcomed.
Something different this week is the bunched green garlic.  If you’re a garlic fan, these are marvelous in any dish that you would normally use garlic.  You might think at first they are leeks (same family) and one whiff will tell you it’s garlic!
Our spring flowers are coming in (sweet peas too) and the farm is lovely.  We encourage shareholders to come over and enjoy your senses!  Corgi’s love to be petted too.
We now have a ‘tab’ on www.seabreezeorganicfarm.org to purchase a delivery going directly to local military families.   Letting your friends and associates know of this program will be appreciated as well.

May you enjoy and utilize all your items for this week.  If you need suggestions for use or recipes on any of your items, feel free to email me and I’ll help.

Please note that some substitutions may apply from time to time.
