Dear Friends,
Whew..we made it through Thanksgiving week! That is no small feat when you consider we lose work days of being able to harvest, sort, clean, organize and pack delivery bags for ‘holidays’. With a few exceptions of those that know, most people have no idea the human effort that goes into seeding, planting, watering, weeding, fertilizing and picking to have food on one’s table. Good food. Not food grown by computers and machines. It’s an art, a science, a position on the State of affairs. Thank you to our loyal supporters that know we really are taking the stand of guarding our fertile and productive little plot of land. It’s quite amazing really.
Your items for this week span the range of nutrients. I learned something new about how much, or little, some people know about cooking. One subscriber asked never to receive beets because they were too messy to peel before cooking! If you think this too and it’s just too much mess and time, rest assured. No, no you don’t peel before either boiling or baking. The skin slips easily off once cooked and there’s no mess. Delicious as they are with all their nutritional value and baking helps caramelize the ‘sugar’ content. And yes, your digestive remains will reflect the red color…not a terrible disease that years ago one woman told me she got from eating our beets!
- On a personal note, I have an emergency dental appointment for today at one pm with our dentist in Tijuana. Listening closely to news reports on the border crisis and movement through the cross over. Keep your fingers crossed for us.
If you have any special requests, let me know. We’ll see if we have or can source for you.
If you would like to help support the farm and our work, please consider signing up for our Hungry Heroes program (click here for more information) that donates to appreciative San Diego military families or through Produce for Patriots ( click here for more information), the non-profit founded by one of our clients, Rob M. And you’ll receive a personal Thank You note from the family that receives. It’s a good thing all ’round.
Here’s to good food, friends, families and helping others.
Call or email me if you have questions or need cooking tips.
May our food this week nourish, comfort and sustain you.
