October 23, 2017 Acts of Kindness

You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Dear Friends,
What a fabulous week we had at the farm.  Kind visitors, glorious weather and actually, lots ‘done’ and that always makes me happy!
We start this week knowing the next three days are going to be extra hot.  Good for our remaining tomatoes..not so good for baby transplants.  Kendall’s going to be putting netting over our recent delicate transplants to help protect them from the sun and heat.
One of our CSA guests this week, was a lady (and long time subscriber) with her grand daughter that was visiting.  She was so interested in everything and said she hadn’t been before because she just had faith we were doing things the right way like her grandparents had done.  She was so delighted to see everything and her granddaughter just fell in love with Elsa our goat.  Neither one of them seemed to be able to get enough of each other!
We have added a new local producer..one of those chance things that happens, an almost 90 yr old grower and his family that have been growing all types of fruits and trees for 30 years on their 4 acres in San Marcos privately for themselves, friends and family only.   This is their first venture into sharing their bounty and we welcome them and appreciate their foresight and hard work.  They even brought me samples of things that were new to me (not that I know everything)!
This probably isn’t a good week weather wise to be making soups or stews or casseroles.  Too  dang hot but that’s when the trusty crock pot is invaluable.  Have you ever used it to make baked potatoes?  The russets this week are exceptionally good and if you haven’t tried cooking them in a crock pot, please do.  The flavor and texture are extraordinary and then to continue to congratulate yourself on being such a good cook, load it up with butter, sour cream and hopefully you have some chives left.  It’s like a meal to itself.
May our food this week nourish, comfort and sustain you.
