Our deep respect for the land and its harvest is the legacy of generations of farmers who put food on our tables, preserved our landscape, and inspired us with a powerful work ethic.
– James H. Douglas, Jr
Dear Friends,
Ever wonder why farmers have the image of being old and grumpy?  It doesn’t happen quickly.  It takes years and years of commitment to develop fertile and productive land, weathering more than heat or cold or bugs.  Then one day, you realize you have become that effigy. Saturday, we hosted some families interested in showing their children ‘where food is grown’ and as experienced as I am, when someone at the end asked “what are you doing for Labor Day?”, politely replied, “we’ll be working and harvesting”.  Wide eyed, the reply “Oh, I hadn’t thought about that!”.  Same thing, every year.  I’m crusty.
This coming Saturday you’re invited to come to the farm, 9-11, and help harvest our gourds and winter squashes.  Not ‘hard’ work and you might find it pleasant to be here.  Flowers are blooming and the goats love treats.  Please let me know if you’d like to as we’ll need to plan for parking spaces.
Don’t forget to order from our latest batch of  local honey.  One person ordered last week and I do my best to support other local food producers but can’t do it alone.  Let’s keep the bees busy and support them!
Vacation time is here for many and our military families are always grateful to receive your share.  Just drop us a note when you’ll be gone and we’ll see it’s given for good use.
Here’s to good food, friends, families and helping others.
Call or email me if you have questions or need cooking tips.
May our food this week nourish, comfort and sustain you.
