The Art of Food

January 27, 2020
Volume 1,664
““… food is not simply organic fuel to keep body and soul together, it is a perishable art that must be savoured at the peak of perfection.”
― E.A. Bucchianeri, Brushstrokes of a Gadfly,
Dear Friends,
There are times when farming can be a little hum drum. Seed, plant, water, weed, water, harvest. But Saturday we had a nice break from our routine with about 20 members from the San Diego Urban Sketchers that came for a quick tour and then everyone chose a spot to do a painting. As a student of watercolor myself, it was a delight to observe such an enthusiastic group look around with fresh vision and choose a focus point from which to preserve their impressions. We look forward to having them back someday as the seasons change.
There’s a saying about farmers..they’re only as good as the land they walk.
Enjoy your fresh fruits and veggies for the week.
If you would like to help support the farm and our work, please consider signing up for our Hungry Heroes program that donates to appreciative San Diego military families or through Produce for Patriots, the non-profit founded by one of our clients, Rob M. You’ll receive a personal Thank You note from the family that receives. It’s a good thing all ’round.
Here’s to good food, friends, families and helping others. Call or email me if you have any questions or need cooking tips. May our food this week nourish, comfort and sustain you.

Late late for a very important date.
Apologies for the late items list. I blame the new computer. I have a remedy..I’d like to throw it through the window! Or maybe will just go pull weeds.

Giving thanks

November 25, 2019
Volume 1,656
Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.
Dear Friends,
Thankfulness for me is the daily experience of working the farm and coaxing the land to provide food, foliage, fauna and clean air for us, the Seabreeze crew and our patrons. We all share I think, the goal of growing beneficial crops and doing our part to protect our world. Your support helps the Farm weather the storms. Thank you.
The photo is some of the lettuce we grow. It’s not from Salinas. Another sound reason I think for having local farms. It’s a shame about the recall. Everyone needs more vegetables in their diets, not to avoid them.
Friendly reminder – this week we’ll be packing on Tuesday so will be ready for Farm Pick-ups on Tues. after 1 pm or all day Wednesday. Wednesday deliveries will be the same and it’s the Thursday deliveries that will have to be on Tuesday.
Enjoy your fresh veggies for the week…and take a nice autumn walk when you can.

Love & Hate – Is That a Turnip You’re Holding?

November 18, 2019
Volume 1,656
Dear Friends,
Woe of the week. Now, I already have a love/hate relationship with technology as my associates know all too well. I mean, why else did I become a’farmer’ at 40 except to hopefully escape from the modern world and yet, here I am, tied to computers and ‘Droids and with no choice about the matter. The old office computer (over 10 yrs old?) inexplicably and most inconveniently, decided to bow out forever early Thursday morning. Any crisis I share about wild animals, invasive weeds, devouring insects, escalating costs of basic services –all pale to the daunting task of staring at screens and programs different from the old familiar ones (Windows 7) and relying on my already over tasked tech friends to drop their lives and obligations to get us running again. I’d much rather be digging a drainage ditch!. So heart felt gratitude to Donna, Rob and Michael for coming to the rescue and Kendall, my long enduring husband.
So let’s talk about something much more exciting (pun)..turnips! I know, they have a really bad rap, but honestly, these little beauties will (hopefully) change your minds. They don’t look anything like the big, tough and frankly nasty tasting things in the store. These white little gems are not strong in taste, with a mild flavor and are delicious either raw or lightly cooked (please don’t overcook–they’ll be mushy). The seeds are very expensive and worth every dime. Do so hope you enjoy them. It was quite chilly out when they were harvested, causing stiff and cold fingers so hope you like them.
The next week will be Thanksgiving so remember we’ll be packing on Tuesday morning, delivering Thursday people the same day and Wednesday people on schedule. Farm pick-ups may come Tuesday or Wednesday of that week. Good luck to all with the squeezed schedule and hope it won’t be too stressful. Still don’t understand why we can’t have these ‘get together holidays when daylight is longer!
Enjoy your fresh veggies for the week…and take a nice autumn walk when you can.
