December 28, 2015 Stone Soup

Winter is the season in which people try to keep the house as warm as it was in the summer, when they complained about the heat. ~Author Unknown

Dear Friends,
Here’s my advice for cooking this week.  Put on a pot of water.  Be brave and open your refrigerator and take stock of any leftovers and then open all your vegetable trays to see if anything needs to be used.  Start simmering whatever you think will all go together:  garlic, onions, carrots, scallions, bell peppers, greens, potatoes, celery, chives, bay leaves, herbs..get the idea?  I add a vegetable bouillon cube and Bragg’s for additional flavor.
Let simmer about 20 minutes.  If you’ve put in big chunks or ends (mine go to the chickens), strain and pour back into pot.  You can either serve this in mugs with a little Parmesan cheese and croutons as is for a nourishing broth consume (helps ward off colds and such) or add left-over dishes for a heartier soup.  Either way, you’ve just made Stone Soup!
Thank you to those that ordered our Gift of Health selection to give as gifts.  Maybe we’ll have some more folks sign up for deliveries.  That would be wonderful.
It’s going to be cold tomorrow for harvesting.  I’ll take a thermos of our broth to help stay warm!
We have wonderful delicious first of the year cauliflower starting to mature.  Not too many yet but I posted on the Green Store if you’d like to add to your delivery this week.
As you travel this holiday season, please remember the farm continues on with it’s cycles of planting and harvesting.  Your continued support of our production is valued and we’ll be here when you come back.  Our local military families benefit from your delivery donations and it helps with securing the farm.
So enjoy your items in good health and happy cooking.
