November 2, 2015 The Mystery and Wonder of the Farm

To dig in the mellow soil- to dig moderately, for all pleasures should be taken sparingly – is a great thing.  One gets strength out of the ground as often as one really touches it with a hoe. There is life in the ground; it goes into the seeds; and it also, when it is stirred up, goes into the person who stirs it.
-Charles Dudley Warner
Dear Friends,
There is mystery and wonder for all of us each day.  Here at the farm we’re surrounded with the miracles of nature in all her complexities.  Early in the mornings, walking the farm, smelling the damp earth, checking for overnight raiders, observing any changes from the day before and even ducking the webs of our beneficial spiders, fills the senses and gives renewed enthusiasm for our work.  The temperatures over the week-end were warm again, although not as high as the heat spells we San Diegans have had over the last few months and even with the shorter days, the crops are looking good and we expect good harvest.
One of the items in your delivery this week, is a small leafy green in a baggie.  Purslane, or verdolarga, is one of nature’s gifts for power packed nutrition. This is a good article on the nutritional properties: Purslane
It has a fresh, lemony taste to it when eaten raw although other cultures prepare cooked dishes with it.  Here is a simple salad recipe you might like to try:
Another sign of fall is the arrival of persimmons.  Chances are some of you may not have had the pleasure of them before so here’s another article on how to enjoy:
So enjoy your items in good health and happy cooking.
